ABOUT
Wyrd Instruments truly formed in 2022 as a team of guitar makers, set to pursue a shared dream of making their own instruments. In late 2025, we had finally built the instrument we had been striving to create.
Southern California's has a deep history of guitar making and innovation, from Paul Bigsby in Downey and Semie Mosley in Bakersfield, Fender in Fullerton and Rickenbacker in Santa Ana. We at Wyrd aim to continue the tradition of innovation, creating instruments built with our modern methodology for maximum performance while too honoring the classic shapes and designs of the greats before us.
MATERIALS
NECK STOCK
Our guitars' construction fixes the bridge of the guitar in the same piece of wood as your neck, allowing an extremely clear tonal response, otherwise dampened by bolt-on or glue-in construction. The nape of our neckshape is countered with a convex break behind the nut, ensuring a strong transition into the headstock, mitigating any break risk, and increasing mass and resonance. We think of our necks as a tuning fork, and the body of the guitar as a fixture holding it. The tonal qualities of the neck stock are the most apparent component in our instruments' individual sound.
Mahogany:
The heritage wood for a Kalamazoo/Nashville guitar neck. Very structurally stable, with a warm timbre and light weight. With a most natural hand-feel and responsiveness, if not swayed by other beauty, Mahogany is a wonderful choice.
Maple:
An affirmed standard to the Bolt-On neck guitar. A California Classic, with bright timbre and sharp, twangy attack. Any fingerboard can imbue their own tonal qualities, but a Maple neck will always have some bite within.
Walnut:
A beautiful alternative to Maple. Harder and denser than mahogany, though not so much as maple in either aspect. We find walnut a very capable wood in all sectors, where Maple can be plain, Walnut is an answer. Where Mahogany can become almost too warm tonally, Walnut can bring an extra shimmer.
Wenge:
Wenge is a special beast. An incredibly dense wood, very bright attack and incredible sense of feel. It's open grain leaves an ever-earthly sense, and its material significance is counterpart to its responsiveness.
Multi-Lam:
Our Multi-Laminate necks can vary wildly, but generally a Multi-Laminate neck will imbue the best of its constituent woods into an extremely stable neck stock. Laminate necks are by nature much stiffer than their one-piece counterparts, without any added weight. Cross-species Multi-Laminate necks have a definitive look of their own, showcasing varying grain pattern and color, still providing a neck more dimensionally stable than any single-piece counterpart.
BODY STOCK
The resonant properties of our instruments mainly reside in the neck stock, the body of our guitar can be thought of as the yoke of a bell. The majority of the sonic principle is encapsulated by this piece; the body does not have the foremost affect on the instruments' sound, but does play a role.
Ash:
A very solid, resonant wood. Generally, instruments with Ash bodies are brighter sounding, with fairly fast attack. Ash has a beautuful open grain structure that is perfect for looks that rely on deep grain patterns, like woody sunbursts, transparent candy and mohair finishes.
Alder:
A softer wood than Ash, very well rounded sonically. Alder is a standard body wood in electric guitars for good reason; it is relatively light and has wide tonal application. Alder's is a wonderful candidate for painted bodies.
Mahogany:
A staple wood for guitar bodies, dense and resonant. Mahogany has a great grain structure to show off with open pore finishes, with resonance and voice worthy of any great instrument.
Korina:
Otherwise known as White Limba, Korina has had a long heritage in guitar making. Korina has essentially the same weight and tonal qualities as mahogany, though more resonant.
